The death penalty in the United States (2024)
In the United States, despite the decrease in the number of executions, the use of the capital punishment still convinces a significant part of the American public opinion. For the United States as a whole, the support of the death penalty went from 80% in 1994 to 53% in 2023, according the last surveys of the company Gallup.

KontraS and ECPM call on the State of Indonesia to seriously consider the situation of the death penalty. In 2022, the number of death sentences peaked, with 82 sentences handed down. Although Indonesia does not release official figures, it was estimated that 483 prisoners were waiting on death row that same year and at least 20% of them were foreigners.
Video – The death penalty in Mauritania (2023)
The AMDH (Association mauritanienne des droits de l'Homme), ECPM's partner in Mauritania, and ECPM, are calling on the Mauritanian government to seriously consider the death penalty situation in the country. While the number of death sentences had remained more or less stable, it exploded in 2021, with 60 death sentences handed down. By 2023, a total of at least 163 people on death row were in prison, including one woman and 18 foreigners.

AJEM, LACR and ECPM, call on the Lebanes state to seriously consider the the death penalty situation in the country. In 2022, 5 new death penalty sentences were handed down, including 4 men and 1 woman. To the end of 2022, at least 78 people on death row were in detention, most of them in very difficult conditions.

Culture pour la Paix et la Justice, ECPM's partners in the DRC, and ECPM, are calling on the Congolese government to address the worrying situation of the death penalty in the country: by 2023, at least 800 people are threatened with execution, following a 600% increase in death sentences between 2020 and 2022.
Video – The death penalty in Malaysia (2023)
Following the abolition of the mandatory death penalty in 2023, more than 900 individuals on death row who had exhausted their ordinary legal appeals have had a chance to seek a review of their sentence. The Federal Court of Malaysia began hearing resentencing applications in November 2023. Thus far, 835 death sentences have been reversed after review and replaced with life imprisonment - between 30 and 40 years (and whipping for male convicts depending on the crime). ADPAN and ECPM encourage the Malaysian government to take further steps towards the total abolition of the death penalty, including abolishing capital punishment for drug-related offences.

Droits et Paix, and ECPM, call on the State of Cameroon to seriously consider the situation of the death penalty. In early 2023, it was estimated that more than 135 people on death row were being held in Cameroonian prisons.
