What do you expect from your participation in this Regional Congress?

By participating in the regional conference, the European Saudi Organization for Human Rights expects to shed light on the death penalty in Saudi Arabia and the reality of this punishment in light of the continued threat to the lives of dozens there. In addition, ESOHR expects to increase networking with those interested in the issue of the death penalty around the world, and most importantly, the participation of organizations from countries in the region in the vision required by the death penalty in these countries

What is the situation of the death penalty in the Middle East?

The countries of the Middle East are the most prominent countries that still apply the death penalty in the world, and Saudi Arabia is on the list of countries that implement it the most, in light of the lack of serious progress with regard to limiting the use of this penalty. In addition, the deficiencies in the judicial systems, the lack of transparency and the obstacles to civil society in these countries are additional factors that increase the abuse of the death penalty in the countries of the Middle East.

Why is capital punishment still a sensitive issue in the region?

Cultural, religious and political factors overlap to make the death penalty a sensitive issue in the region and to make work to reduce it more difficult. The obstacles facing civil society and human rights defenders confirm that the road is still long and arduous, and efforts must be combined to seek to stop the death penalty.
